Lessons Learned and Insights Gained From my Data Analytics Internship in London, England
Experience Abroad in London
This fall, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in London through the CEA CAPA program. Alongside my academic journey, I undertook a finance and data analytics internship with the Association of Citizenship Teaching (ACT). The experience was nothing short of amazing, offering both professional growth and cultural immersion. In this blog post, I aim to reflect on my unique experiences and offer advice to prospective students considering studying or interning abroad.
My Internship Environment
Working in a hybrid environment at WeWork, where most days consisted of virtual meetings, I had to adapt to a dynamic work setting that combined both in-person and virtual interactions. However, my worries quickly dissipated as I embraced this new way of working. Also, it is good to point out that the WeWork I operated out of had quite the view of London as seen from the picture below.
Whenever I faced challenges, my coworkers were always just a Google Meet call away, ready to provide guidance and support. The prospect of interning for a company overseas and navigating a new culture was daunting, but my colleagues and supervisors at ACT were incredible mentors. They went above and beyond to ensure that I felt comfortable and valued in the office, making my London experience truly worthwhile.
Building Professional Skills
During my three-month tenure at ACT, I played a key role in cleaning the database and ensuring our clients' experience with the platform was seamless. While some might not find the intricacies of data storage and collection exciting, I discovered that these skills are invaluable for my future career as a data analyst.
The practical experience I gained in data analytics and finance was complemented by the mentorship I received from my supervisors. They provided insights into the industry and helped me develop a deeper understanding of the professional world. I am immensely grateful to CEA CAPA for expertly matching me with this internship opportunity. ACT has proven to be an exceptional workplace, providing me with a wealth of skills that will undoubtedly shape my professional journey. One advantage of working at a WeWork as an intern was that I could talk to a lot of other people in the office that worked for different companies. At lunch, I would make it a goal to meet someone different on the outside balcony and learn about what they did.
Cultural Connections and Personal Growth
One of the highlights of each week was our Monday morning meetings. Engaging with my coworkers, hearing their weekend stories, and getting suggestions for exploring Europe added a distinctive touch to my experience. These meetings were more than just professional check-ins; they were opportunities to build connections and learn about unfamiliar cultures.
In retrospect, my internship experience was not just about gaining professional skills; it was a fulfilling journey that left me with lasting memories and a sense of belonging. The Monday meetings, filled with insightful discussions and positive energy, made ACT feel like a second family.
Advice for Prospective Internship Students
Studying or interning abroad can be intimidating, especially when it involves adapting to new work environments and cultures. However, embracing the unknown is a crucial part of the experience. Be open to new challenges and trust that you will grow from them.
Use Your Support Systems
Do not hesitate to seek support from your colleagues, supervisors, and program coordinators. They are there to help you succeed and make the most of your experience. Building a support network can make a big difference in your comfort and confidence levels. The team I worked with at my internship became like family for me when I was in London and were always there for helpful tips.
Value Every Experience
Whether it is a professional task that seems mundane or a casual conversation with a coworker, every experience you have while studying abroad is valuable. You need to remember that your coworkers know that you are studying abroad and will be more than happy to give you good recommendations on things to do. For example, my boss told me to visit the White Cliffs of Dover, which to this day might be the most beautiful place I have ever seen.
Prepare for Cultural Differences
Understanding and respecting cultural differences is essential. Take the time to learn about the local culture and be open to different perspectives. This will enhance your ability to connect with theirs and enrich your overall experience. My favorite thing to do before work was eating breakfast at the local café, where I was able to take in the culture of the locals.
A Heartfelt Thank You
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the support and encouragement I received during my internship; I eagerly anticipate applying these experiences to shape my future endeavors. A special thank you is also extended to CEA CAPA and the team for providing me and my classmates with this exceptional opportunity. The three months I spent in London were nothing short of amazing, allowing me to create lasting memories and forge lifelong friendships on this remarkable journey.
