DESCRIPTION

The course will provide a comprehensive historical overview of Renaissance architecture in Italy during the period 1400-1600. It begins by exploring the humanist culture that emerged in Florence and then spread to other Italian cities, such as Rome, Urbino, Mantua, and Venice. Lectures will consider the groundbreaking works of Brunelleschi and Alberti as well as the classical period of Bramante and the Manneristic revolution set by Michelangelo and Raphael. The course will also examine the theoretical foundations of the Renaissance movement, focusing on the writings of influential figures such as Vitruvius, Alberti, Vasari and Palladio.

Other relevant topics are: the principles of Renaissance city planning, the development of urban spaces, the evolution of villa suburbana and the transformation of Renaissance gardens. Additionally, the course will address patronage and the dynamics of economics, political and socio-cultural elements that shaped architectural practices during this period.

Through visiting important and meaningful sites, students will acquire a firsthand knowledge that will allow them to critically analyze and interpret Renaissance architecture.
